State humane officers from the San Diego Humane Society are due to arrive in the Valley this afternoon to check on the conditions of horses, goats and cattle on a ramshackle farm between Imperial and Brawley.

In the Probe column in this newspaper yesterday, the plight of the animals on the farm was reported and a picture of one of the four horses at the place was printed.

The response from the public was immediate. Offers of feed and money have been pouring in.

Meanwhile some local people have been in communication with the San Diego Humane Society. Capt. Bill Virden, director of that organization and Dr. Jean Immenschuh, a veterinarian and owner of a Quarterhorse and Hereford ranch in the San Diego area. Both are state humane officers and are empowered to impound animals if they are deemed to be mistreated.

The district attorney’s office today denied it made any deals concerning sentencing of a Holtville man convicted of offering to sell heroin to undercover officers last year.

The response by Assistant District Attorney Michael Vendrasco was made in connection with a news story Wednesday which stated Kenneth David Harvey had been guaranteed straight probation term as part of a pre-conviction deal.

“Our office, through Deputy District Attorney Richard Chamberlin, argued for over an hour in an attempt to seek a state prison term for Harvey,” Vendrasco said. “But Superior Court Judge George R. Kirk wouldn’t go for it.”

Vendrasco said Kirk appeared to make his decision based on Probation Department report that did not recommend state prison for the alleged heroin dealer.
