Four CUHS seniors awarded Alumni Fund scholarships
EL CENTRO — Four graduating Central Union High School seniors have caught a break on their college costs next year through the CUHS Alumni Scholarship Fund.
Joanna Ramirez, Melenie Padilla, Monica Villa and Ana Romero-Verdin each received $1,000 from the fund to apply toward continuing their education next fall at Imperial Valley College or San Diego State University-Imperial Valley. The Scholarship Fund Committee presented the scholarships to the girls at Central’s Senior Awards ceremony on Monday.
Ramirez will be majoring in psychology while attending IVC and then transferring to SDSU-IV. She hopes to become a special education teacher.
Padilla plans to earn her degree in cultural anthropology, which she hopes will eventually lead to an opportunity to teach at the college level.
Villa has made her education a priority since moving to this country five years ago. She has her heart set on a career in criminal justice.
Romero-Verdin also has an eye on a criminal justice degree, with hopes of eventually becoming a homicide detective.
The CUHS Alumni Scholarship Fund was started by a group of 1960 CUHS alumni in March 2012 and has collected more than $72,400 in donations. The scholarship committee has awarded a total of $36,250 in scholarships to 26 students to date.
The scholarship fund is administered by the Imperial Valley College Foundation under the leadership of Rod Smart. We consider this program to be among the most efficient in the country.
Eligibility is restricted to graduating CUHS seniors who are planning to continue their education locally at IVC and/ or SDSU-IV.
We look at not only their grades but also their involvement in school and in the community.
As a community, we should all be proud of these students.
Eligibility for membership on the scholarship fund committee is now open to all CUHS alumni. Current members are Cap Pinney, Noel Carr, Nita Mallobox, Donna Yarnell, David Tyler, Judy Low, Sedalia Sanders, Gayle Hartmann, Lois DuBois and Joe Golden.
Donations to the CUHS Alumni Scholarship Fund may be made to the IVC Foundation in care of Rod Smart, 380 E. Aten Road, Imperial, CA 92251, or call (760) 355-6113. nita Mallobox is a 1960 graduate of central Union High school and a founding member of the cUHs Alumni scholarship Fund.
