As the high school spring sports season recently came to a close, the postseason accolades have begun to be rolled out, including the 2018 CIFSan Diego Section All-Academic Teams and Section Scholars.

Locally, seven programs were recognized by CIF-SDS for the students’ efforts off the athletic fields and in the classroom.

Tallying the most academic awards during the spring season was Holtville High, which came away with six of the seven team honors up for grabs.

The Vikings’ baseball, boys’ golf, boys’ and girls’ swimming, and boys’ and girls’ track and field were all honored as the region’s top academic squads for having the highest combined, unweighted grade-point averages among their competitors. Rounding out the seven local teams honored was the softball team from Borrego Springs.

In addition to recognizing the top team in the region, the CIF-SDS also recognized the top individual scholar on each of these teams.

This honor is reserved for the junior or senior on each team with the highest cumulative, weighted high school grade-point average. Those students are known as Cymer Scholars.

Earning spring Cymer Scholar recognition were Holtville High’s Tino Burfield, baseball; Alexa Strahm, girls’ track; Jonathan Osuna, boys’ track; Jace Heraz, golf; Sarah Grizzle, girls’ swimming, and David Lopez-Larios, boys’ swimming, while the Borrego Springs student to make the list was Rams softball player Vanessa Rodarte.
