Mayor files request for bridge project
Mexicali Mayor Gustavo Sánchez formally asked Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for the construction of two bridges that would connect the new west port of entry with the city’s downtown area.
The mayor was able to approach Mexico’s Commander in Chief during Monday’s visit to Tecate.
Mayor Sánchez told La Crónica newspaper he submitted a documented request to the president.
The project is under control of the Mexican Department of Defense and is being supervised by other agencies.
The bridge project would cost local authorities $14.4 million.
Mayor Sánchez told the newspaper the funds are expected to be obtained by year’s end.
Local merchants expect sales declines of up to 40 percent due to the lack of traffic access from the new port of entry.
