Hueso recognizes Calexico resident
For his volunteer efforts throughout the community, Calexico native Javier Gonzalez was recognized by 40th District State Sen. Ben Hueso as the Citizen of the Month.
Gonzalez’s recognition was announced Tuesday in Sen. Hueso’s June newsletter.
“Gonzalez is well-known around Calexico for always giving back to the community,” the newsletter said. “Thank you, Javier, for your tireless efforts on behalf of our district.”
Gonzalez earned a master’s degree in public administration in 2015 from San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus, and has put his education to great use supporting local initiatives and community activism.
The Calexico native leads the Kennedy Gardens Neighborhood Watch, an organized group of civilians devoted to crime and vandalism prevention.
Throughout the years, the group has organized graffiti-removal events, and it holds weekly park cleanups to ensure local parks are clean and well maintained.
Gonzalez also volunteers with the Mas que Vencedores Christian Church each month to help feed those in need around local parks in Calexico.
For the past two years, Gonzalez has organized Calexico’s Earth Arbor Day Celebration Fair at John F. Kennedy Park. The fair is centered on health, safety and environmental programs that are available around the Imperial Valley.
