Eagles’ Toor tops tennis list
The All-Imperial Valley League boys’ tennis team was announced a few weeks ago, with the list reflecting the competitive play between local teams this year.
The all-league list was made up of players from three different schools and was highlighted by Southwest High’s Raj Toor, who earned the league Player of the Year honor this season.
Toor, an Eagle junior, dropped just one set during the regular season, before going on to win the individual tourney in May that was held at Calexico High.
Toor has appeared on the all-league list each season since his freshman campaign at Southwest High.
That year, Toor was the only freshman and the only Eagle to appear on the list amid a sea of Calexico and Vincent Memorial stars.
This season, Toor was joined by teammates Calvin Patel and Dario Rodriguez on the allleague list.
The latter pair worked as a competitive doubles team for the Eagles this season.
While the top individual honor went to Toor, the league’s crown once again went to the Scots of Vincent Memorial.
Vincent Memorial went unbeaten in local play this season and also advanced to the semifinals of the CIF-San Diego Section Div. I tourney.
Helping the Scots to that mark were Mariano Santana, Francisco Moreno and Federico Duarte, who were all named to the all-league team.
For the Scots, this is also a repeat all-league honor for Santana.
The recent Vincent Memorial grad made the list in 2016 and was the 2017 Player of the Year.
Rounding out the all-IVL list was a handful of athletes from Calexico High, who did well in IVL and postseason play.
In the CIF-SDS Div. II tourney, the Bulldogs advanced to the quarterfinals with help from Sebastian Vizcarra, Gustavo Meza, Jorge Lopez, Sebastian Pelayo and Diego Gallego, who all earned all-league honors.
