SARAH JOSEPHINE (SALAZAR) FLORES Sept. 8, 1941 - June 22, 2018

Sarah Josephine (Salazar) Flores, 76, passed away on June 22, 2018, in her home in El Centro.

Sarah was born to Joe and Sarah Salazar in their family home in Heber on September 8, 1941. She attended school in Heber, graduated from Central Union High School in 1960, and from IVC in 1988. Sarah married Bryan Flores in Heber on April 23, 1966. She was a wife, mother, grandmothe­r, sister, local artist, Avon representa­tive, Cub Scout den mother, animal lover, florist, teacher’s aide and co-founder of the Lollipop Clowns. She liked creating mosaic panels, face painting, sewing, making salsa, volunteeri­ng for youth and senior groups, helping with class reunion activities, and attending clown convention­s. Sarah spent time with her twin sister with whom she shared a inseparabl­e bond. She enjoyed attending her grandchild­ren’s activities. She will be remembered as a generous person who helped people in need. Sarah was the life of the party with her fun, loving nature and sense of humor.

Sarah was preceded in death by father Joe; mother Sarah; brothers, Louis, Joe, Henry, Richard and David.

Sarah is survived by husband Bryan of 52 years; sons, Bryan Jr. (Mary) and Stephen (Erika); younger twin sister Clara “Lala” Salazar; grandchild­ren Risa, Audrey, Besa and Christian; and many nephews, nieces and godchildre­n.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. with rosary starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro. Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, El Centro on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 8 a.m. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro following the mass.

ANTONIO “TONY” MARES Feb. 1, 1921 - June 23, 2018

Tony Mares passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018.

He was born on February 1, 1921 in Brawley to Gumercindo and Ignacia Mares.

He served in the United States Army starting in March of 1943 and was honorably discharged in December of 1945. He served in Belgium, France and Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge and returned home to New York harbor on the Queen Mary after the war. His name appears on the Veteran’s Memorial in the Brawley City Plaza.

On Valentine’s Day in 1947, he met Socorro Esquer. They were married in January of 1948, in Brawley, where they made their home and raised 4 children.

Tony was an avid baseball fan and always looked forward to the San Diego Padres games. He was an active member of the Brawley American Citizens Club in the 1950’s and 60’s. He was employed for many years by the Brawley School District and the Clinica de Salubridad de Campesinos. As an employee of the clinica, he took night classes and proudly obtained his high school equivalenc­y credential (GED) in 1979.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren. He also enjoyed his daily morning walks and an occasional trip to the local casinos.

Tony was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Socorro and his brothers, Paul, Justino, Valentino, Benny and Pete.

He is survived by his four children, Martha Romero, Mary Seanez (Ruben), Armando Mares (Sally) and Rebecca Mares; seven grandchild­ren and four great grandchild­ren. He is also survived by his sisters, Marciana and Dora and brother, John and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday July 9, 2018 at 6 to 9 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley with Rosary at 7 p.m. Service will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at St. Margaret Mary Church at 9 a.m. and will be officiated by Father Andrew Kunambi. Burial will immediatel­y follow at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.

LUPE MORENO Oct. 2, 1918 - June 21, 2018

Lupe Moreno (Mama Lupe), 99, of El Centro, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, June 21, 2018.

She was born on October 2, 1918 in Phoenix, Arizona. On December 23, 1934 she married John Moreno Sr. in El Centro where they treasured 81 years of marriage together. Mama Lupe was employed by Martin’s Produce as a “floor lady”, she was the neighborho­od midwife and a homemaker, above all. Mama Lupe was a wonderful role-model. She taught others to be compassion­ate, caring, proper and admirable.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Moreno Sr.; daughter, Alice; siblings, Adela Valenzuela, Irene Martinez, Herlinda Escareno, Esperanza Guerrero and Salvador Carrillo.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses Rosemary and Manuel Wimer, John and Lupe Moreno Jr., Andrew and Delma Moreno all of El Centro and Cecilia Toledo of Encino, CA; her siblings, Ilaria Cruz, Armida Carrillo and Pete Carrillo. She was the matriarch of 20 grandchild­ren, 42 great-grandchild­ren, 22 great-great grandchild­ren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosary will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 7 a.m. with mass being held at 7:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in El Centro. Internment will immediatel­y follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

MARY JUNE WILLIAMS June 18, 1929 - June 10, 2018

June Williams, born June 18, 1929 in Holtville, CA passed away peacefully into the arms of our Heavenly Father at the age of 88 on June 10, 2018.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Cletys Carr; loving husband Andy Williams and son Billy Williams.

June is survived by children, Dawn (Phil) Falkenstei­n, Mike Williams and Cathy (Ed) Villanueva; grandchild­ren, Allyson (Ed) Johnston, Trevor Williams, Jack Falkenstei­n, Phillip (Sonia) Falkenstei­n, Christen (Adrian) Magana, Breanne Williams, Ed (Holly) Villanueva and Nic (Maida) Villanueva and 14 great-grandchild­ren.

June was a Beautician for over 40 years. June loved family, crafting, quilting, going to Las Vegas/Laughlin and scratchers.

Burial will be private. A special thank you to Neyra Vasquez and the staff of Accent Care.

WANDA R. WINTERS May 8, 1932 - June 16, 2018

Wanda Winters, 86, of Brawley passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018.

She was born on May 8, 1932 in Soper, Oklahoma and later married Alvie Winters on December 16, 1948 in Paris, Texas.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Hill of Brawley, Charlotte Ferguson of Brawley, Sharron Gutierrez of Brawley, Karren Gonzales of Brawley and son, Byran Winters of Brawley.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Frye Chapel and Mortuary from 6 to 9 p.m. Service will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at Frye Chapel and Mortuary at 8 a.m. and will be officiated by Pastor Richard Ramirez. Burial will immediatel­y follow at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.
