CALEXICO Suspected meth smuggler arrested

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Calexico station, arrested a man suspected of smuggling methamphetamine Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m., when agents observed a person in Mexico throw a package over the International Boundary Fence just near the Calexico port of entry.

When the subject saw Border Patrol agents approaching, he began to run. Agents arrested the man after a brief foot pursuit and recovered the package he received from Mexico.

The package was tested and the contents proved positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine. The package weighed 2 pounds, with an estimated street value of $5,300.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Calexico Border Patrol station for processing. The 27-year-old U.S. citizen and the drugs were turned over to the Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation.

In fiscal year 2018, El Centro Sector agents have seized more than 895.35 pounds of methamphetamine.

Heat claims life of man near border

With the National Weather Service in Phoenix issuing an excessive heat warning for this week, El Centro Sector Border Patrol Officials are warning that the impacts of the excessive heat are high due to the extreme risk of heat-related illness or risk of death for those who cross illegally into the United States.

Affected areas for this excessive heat warning are parts of southeast California, including Blythe and El Centro. The high temperatures during this week will range from 114 to 118 degrees during the day with little overnight relief hitting lows of 85 to 90 degrees.

On Friday, Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue agents conducted an intensive search to find an illegal alien who was left behind by smugglers when he became ill. Agents located the man, but found him unresponsive and in need of immediate medical attention. Agents and medical professionals provided care, however the man succumbed to the elements.

The man’s body was transferred to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office.
