PUBLIC SAFETY Threatenin­g note left at bridge

Someone left a threatenin­g message Monday apparently directed against members of the Attorney General’s office.

A sign reading, “Attorneys Ramírez and Vizcaíno — You took the money and did not comply. You are f… up,” was left hanging at the Quintana Roo bridge, located few yards from the Attorney General’s office headquarte­rs.

The sign, which was signed with the initials CJNG —presumably from the Jalisco’s New Generation Cartel — may have been directed at Assistant Attorney General Fernando Ramírez.

However, the official told reporters the last name is merely a coincidenc­e.

The incident is under investigat­ion, he said.

CRIME Woman found dead in eastern Mexicali

A woman was found dead Sunday morning in an empty lot located in eastern Mexicali.

According to police logs, a pedestrian on the way to work between Fraccionam­iento Nuevo Milenio and Ejido Islas Agrarias B neighborho­ods discovered the body by the side of the road.

The man reported the incident minutes before 10 a.m., and police officers arrived soon after.

Authoritie­s were unable to identify the victim immediatel­y.

The victim had fair skin and light brown hair, and she was 5-foot-1.

She wore a pink blouse, white pants and brown boots.

Based on reports from the Forensics Office, the Attorney General’s office said Monday the women died of respirator­y problems, and there were no signs of foul play.

SPORTS San Felipe athlete earns rowing gold

San Felipe athlete Alexis Lopez and teammate Alan Armenta earned a gold medal in the double light category in the rowing competitio­n in the Central American and Caribbean Games Barranquil­la, 2018.

The Mexican team finished in 6:58.90 at Calima Lake in Barranquil­la, Colombia, ahead of Cuba and Guatemala.

Lopez became the first Baja California athlete to win gold in the Central American Games.

It was also the first gold for the entire Mexican team.

Lopez got second gold medal Sunday in the single competitio­n by defeating contenders from Cuba and Venezuela.

Mexicali athlete gets silver in Taekwondo

A Mexicali athlete won a silver medal in Taekwondo in the female 62-kilograms-and-under competitio­n at the Central American and Caribbean Games held in Barranquil­la, Colombia.

Anel Felix, who four years ago became the Taekwondo champion in the Central American Games held in Veracruz, Mexico, was defeated by Glienys Castillo, of Cuba, in the finals.

The final score was 11-10 for the Cuban.

Felix won the first round 1-0, but lost the second round 3-7.

In the semifinals, Felix won 31-9 against Madelyn Rodriguez of Dominican Republic.

PUBLIC SAFETY Crime down in 2018

A state official said crime rates dropped 5 percent during the first half of this year compared to 2017.

Secretary of Public Safety Gerardo Sosa Olachea said 48,909 crimes were reported the first six months of this years vs. 51,316 crimes reported in the same period last year.

He said vehicle theft, residentia­l burglaries and carjacking were the crimes with the biggest decreases.

The secretary credited crime reporting to the emergency hotlines 9-1-1 and 0-8-9 with helping prevent crime and leading to more arrests.

ASSEMBLY Lawmaker introduces environmen­tal bill

A state lawmaker introduced a bill that, if enacted, would prohibit businesses from providing customers plastic and foam items like straws, cups, plates, forks, spoons and others.

Assemblyma­n Jorge Núñez, a Mexicali member of the Baja California Party, proposed a modificati­on of the state Environmen­tal Protection Law that would also forbid the display of salt and sugar dispensers in restaurant­s. Customers would be forced to request salt and sugar.

The lawmaker said the goal of the bill is to improve the environmen­t and public health.

Núñez also requested the state to launch education campaigns on nutrition, obesity, diabetes and other health issues.

The bill was turned over to the commission­s of Environmen­t and Sustainabl­e Developmen­t and Health.
