Woman arrested for meth
A 37-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine while crossing through the west port of entry vehicle lanes.
Anna M. Fuentes was taken into custody at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the port of entry by Homeland Security Investigations agents and booked into county jail without bond on suspicion of unlawful importation of a controlled substance, county Sheriff’s Office arrest records stated.
According to a federal court complaint, Fuentes and her vehicle, a 2001 Volkswagen Passat, were referred for a secondary examination Tuesday afternoon while attempting to enter the United States at the port of entry.
A Customs and Border Protection officer performed an X-ray scan of Fuentes’ vehicle and observed an anomaly under the vehicle’s rear seat.
A CBP narcotics and human detection dog was then requested and alerted to the possible odor of drugs in the Passat.
A subsequent search resulted in the discovery of 32 packages hidden in a non-factory compartment under the vehicle’s back seat.
The substance field-tested positive for properties of meth.
The packages of suspected meth had a combined weight of approximately 34.52 pounds.
In the court complaint, Fuentes stated she would be paid $2,000 by a man if she successfully drove the Passat to Phoenix, Ariz.
