Are Democrats capable of a blue wave?

For one of the two major parties in American politics, Democrats are really bad at partisan politics.

If you think Bernie Sanders and a newcomer from New York who thinks he isn’t far enough left are the source of a blue wave, you’re a little crazy.

Sanders won a Democratic primary in Vermont, but he will likely turn it down and run as an independent again. That’s a real party leader you’ve got there.

The electorate may move to the left of President Donald Trump and other far right members of Congress. But they aren’t going that far left.

Independent voters and moderate Republicans can handle a progressive. Most will never support a socialist or leftist.

Democrats need a new voice of the national party. It isn’t Bernie Sanders. It can’t be Hillary Clinton. She — and a few guys at a computer named Ivan — are the reasons you have Donald Trump in the White House.

Ted Lieu from California is a good Democratic voice and a great follow on Twitter. He served his country in the military and continues that service in Congress. If the Democrats are to recover, his voice and those like his will be a big reason.

Instead, they have New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Gov. Cuomo decided to prove President Trump isn’t the only politician who can say crazy things this week when he took on the president’s favorite motto by saying, “We’re not going to make America great again because it was never that great.”

Trump has based his entire presidency on undoing everything that Barack Obama did in his eight years in office. I guess Cuomo thought it would be a good idea to just say the opposite of what Trump says to rile up Democratic support.

I would imagine the greatest generation and baby boomers would have something to say about America’s greatness. There is still work to do, but America has come a long way thanks to civil rights leaders, and this country has always been a beacon of freedom.

I certainly don’t agree with Trump’s vision of what would make this country great again, but I would argue that it already was great, not that it never had been.

Fortunately for Gov. Cuomo, his main opponent in the primary is a Sex in the City cast member, and not one of the popular ones.

But his gaffe is another black eye for the party hoping for a blue wave in November.

It won’t cost him his office, but it won’t help other Democrats who will have his comments thrown back in their face during this election cycle.

Until the Democrats develop top leadership that lines up with voters and can stop tripping themselves every time they have a chance to take a step forward, the blue wave is just a fantasy.
