No injuries reported in apartment fire

-

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported after a structure fire occurred Wednesday morning at a single-story, multi-family apartment building on West Adams Avenue.

The apartment building was under remodeling and unoccupied at the time of the fire, an El Centro Fire Department news release stated.

Upon their arrival, ECFD crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which ICFD investigators have classified to be suspicious in nature.

Shortly after 7:16 a.m. Wednesday, El Centro Police Department responded to a call in the area of Seventh Street and Adams Avenue.

While tending to their call, officers were notified of smoke coming from the building located at 702 W. Adams.

ECPD officers requested assistance from El Centro Fire Department, and they made sure all other apartments were searched and evacuated.

The first ECFD unit arrived on scene at 7:19 a.m. Wednesday, and found the single-story apartment building with smoke coming from a single apartment and the roof of the structure.

El Centro fire crews forced entry, performed search and rescue operations and quickly extinguished the fire.

Crews checked adjacent apartments for fire extension, and none was found. The coordinated fire attack and fire extension search prevented any further fire spread to other apartments or adjacent buildings.

A total of two engine companies, two rescue squads and two battalion chiefs responded, which amounted to a total of 15 firefighters who responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the news release stated.
