Agents apprehend sex offender, known gang member

A 43-year-old Mexican national with an extensive criminal record was apprehende­d by Border Patrol agents at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday near the Calexico downtown port of entry.

Alberto Silva Garcia is alleged to have entered the country illegally, and was reportedly previously convicted for possession of cocaine, theft, burglary, larceny, domestic violence, DUI, and battery, the Border Patrol reported.

Silva was previously deported from the United States in March 2003. Silva was also reportedly sentenced for 12 months prison and 36 months supervised release for re-entering after prior removal in May 2010.

Silva allegedly admitted to being an active member of the Sureños gang, the agency reported. He will be held pending criminal prosecutio­n.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, a 50-year-old Mexican national was apprehende­d by agents 11 miles west of the Calexico Port of Entry for suspected illegal entry.

Jose Flores Alfaro was reportedly previously convicted of sexual abuse of a child in February 2001, and sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Border Patrol reported.

Flores was subsequent­ly ordered removed in August 2009. After being removed in 2009, Flores later re-entered the U.S. and was sentenced to 21 months in prison in August 2016, the agency reported.

Flores is being held pending criminal prosecutio­n.
