Mexico’s National Institute of Immigration said that month 3,707 immigrants were removed to Mexicali.

The agency added that between January and August 20,500 immigrants were deported from the United States into Mexicali, 36.6 percent more than the 15,009 cases registered last year.

Mexicali Director of the Mexican agency Luis Humberto López said authorities expect close to 24,000 immigrants to be deported this year.

Despite the increase, the climb is far from the peak in 2013, when 48,616 Mexican nationals were turned back to Mexico.

López told the newspaper the Mexican government expected a larger number of deportations under the Trump administration, but has not gotten close to the figures reported during the Obama administration.

However, López noted the average number of immigrants deported daily climbed from 41 last year to 85 in 2018. — Arturo Bojorquez, abojorquez@ivpressonline.com
