ALFRED R. URIBE Dec. 9, 1924 - July 27, 2018

Alfred Raul Uribe passed away July 27, 2018, in La Mesa, CA at the age of 93.

He was born the 3rd of 3 boys in San Ignacio, TX to Luis L. and Corina U. Uribe. He was a graduate of Calexico High School and married Grace Lucero, also of Calexico, CA December 26, 1948. After a short time in Brownsvill­e, TX, the couple made their home in Brawley, CA where Al was a coach and teacher at Barbara Worth Jr. High School for more than 35 years.

Al left Calexico High School in the middle of his senior year to join the Army and fight for his country during World War II. Al was stationed in the Solomon Islands and Cebu during the Philippine Campaign. Wounded in action, Al returned to Calexico, October 30, 1945. Among his many medals and ribbons, Al was awarded a Purple Heart for injury on the battlefiel­d, WWII Victory Medal, and Bronze Star for Valor and meritoriou­s heroism during battle. In 1946, Al returned to Calexico High to complete his senior year and continued his studies at Hardin Simmons University, Abilene, TX earning a Bachelors in Business.

Throughout his life, his love of all sports led him not only to coach track, football, baseball, basketball, weightlift­ing, and boxing, but often referee many local games. Alfred was a part of the Brawley Recreation Department and felt that guiding young men to excel in life through sports was his calling. Those who knew him, knew his passion for golf. He continued his weekly regimen of golfing up until his death, even golfing from his wheel chair.

Al is survived by his 4 daughters, Gloria Brister (husband Gene), Norma Wiest, Celina Uribe and Cindy Mannarino (husband Don); grandchild­ren, Greg Grimaldo, Arryn Grimaldo Ayala, James Salazar (husband James Canteen), Gina Brister Snow (husband Forrest) and Brian Salazar; Al was also blessed with 5 great-grandchild­ren, Alycia Grimaldo, Tristan Villalobos, Garrett Canteen, Allen Canteen and Valor Snow.

Al was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Grace Lucero Uribe; his father, Luis; his mother, Corina and his brothers, Elpidio and Ray.

Graveside Funeral Services will be on Monday, September 17, 10:45 a.m. at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA.

BETTY JOAN YOUNG Jan. 30, 1922 - Sept. 6, 2018

Betty Joan Young, 96, of Calipatria, passed away peacefully in her own home surrounded by family on Thursday, September 6, 2018.

Betty was born January 30, 1922 in Washington to parents C.F. and Bird Moore. They moved to Brawley when she was 6 years old. Betty attended Brawley schools and after high school she attended Woodbury College in Los Angeles. After college, she worked for the Herald Examiner Newspaper. She also worked for Robert Warner at Warner Bros. Pictures. After WWII, Betty reunited with her long-time sweetheart W.E. “Bill” Young, Jr. On January 6, 1946, they married and moved into his childhood home in Calipatria and started their farming operation and family. They had 2 sons, the late W.E. “Billy” Young III and Frederick Moore “Rick” Young. After 56 years of marriage, Bill passed away in 2001 and Betty continued their farming operation.

Betty has been involved in numerous local and community philanthro­pic activities. Locally she helped support Friends of the Library, Calipat Youth Athletics, Calipat 4-H & FFA, Bill E. Young Jr. Middle School and various High School projects. Betty’s community efforts included American Red Cross, hours spent at Las Vecinas in Calexico, volunteeri­ng at Los Ninos in El Centro, Betty Jo McNeece Receiving Home and Betty Young School. She has also been a Board Member at Pioneer’s Memorial Hospital and she was an avid DOVES supporter. Betty was also a member of the Farm Bureau, Children’s Home Society, a Cub Scout Den Mother, CA Women for Agricultur­e, Republican Women, Ebell and PEO.

Betty’s passions included reading and travel. The Hawaiian Islands were especially near and dear to her heart.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to In Your Home Healthcare, especially Zenny Mamer and Maricruz Dorantes. We would also like to thank Dr. Oprea’s Office, especially Mary Kay Klockman, NP.

Betty was preceded in death by her son, W.E. “Billy” Young Jr. III and her husband, W.E. Young, Jr.

Betty is survived by her Son, Rick (Lori) Young; Grandson, William Young; Granddaugh­ter, Gina (Dusty) Dockstader; Great-Grandson, Tanner Dockstader, of Brawley and Nieces, June (Blake) Jensen and Patti (Bob) Vilven of San Diego and numerous Great Nephews and Nieces.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley, CA.

JULIA RUIZ GAMBOA Apr. 12, 1927 - Sept. 4, 2018

Julia Ruiz Gamboa, 91, of Calexico, CA passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

Julia was born in Ahuacatlan, Nayarit, Mexico on April 12, 1927.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Valente Gamboa and her sons; Francisco, Jose, Martin and Victor.

She is survived by her daughters; Maria Gamboa, Adelina (Gamboa) Peterson, Rosa Gamboa, Herlinda Gamboa, Diana Gamboa and sons; Raphael Gamboa and Arturo Gamboa. She is also survived by many grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren.

A wake will be held Monday, September 17, 2018 from 6pm-9pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico, with a Rosary to be said at 7pm. The Funeral Mass will be held the following morning, Tuesday, September, 18, at 9am, also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico.

LUCIA G. JIMENEZ Dec. 15, 1931 - Sept. 7, 2018

Lucia G. Jimenez, 86, of El Centro, CA passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018.

Lucia was born on December 15, 1931 in San Luis Potos, MX.

She is survived by 2 sisters; 3 brother, 4 sons; 3 daughters; 26 grandkids and 29 great-grandkids.

Visitation will beheld on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro, CA. Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at 8 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in El Centro, CA. Burial will immediatel­y follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Calexico, CA.
