Kidney transplant successful
State public health officials announced Tuesday a successful kidney transplant took place a week ago at Mexicali General Hospital.
A 26-year-old patient received a second transplant in his life, according to the report.
State Secretary of the Transplant Council Edgar Castillo said the surgery took place Nov. 1.
“A retransplant means it is a transplant performed again in a patient, and this happens after the patient loses the functions of the previous kidney,” Castillo said. “In this case, the patient received the first transplant at 8, and 17 years later, it was the time for a new transplant.”
The patient has already been released from the hospital, according to the report.
The patient said his own mother donated his first kidney.
“If I did not have a new kidney, I would have needed to sit back again in the dialysis chair,” the unidentified patient said.
Authorities said the transplant program at the General Hospital is one of the most successful in the country with more than 50 transplants performed.
