Military checkpoint opened
State and military authorities opened Tuesday the new checkpoint located just next to La Rumorosa Mountain.
Baja California Gov. Francisco Vega said his administration invested 35 million pesos, or $1.79 million, in the facilities.
According to Gov. Vega the new checkpoint allow compliance with security control protocol while expediting traveler inspection.
“This route is also used by those who seek to transport illicit substances,” he said. “This is why this infrastructure will significantly contribute to shield this highway against the traffic of drugs, guns, stolen vehicles and prohibited items.”
Secretary of Infrastructure and Urban Development Alfonso Padrés said the project includes a main building and a ceiling to protect military personnel.
Every year, 3.7 million vehicles cross the checkpoint, of which almost three quarters are passenger vehicles, and one out of every five are cargo trucks.
Around 13.5 million people are inspected at the site per year.
The project also includes a special area with 60 beds for military personnel, dining areas, a waiting room and restrooms.
Second Military Zone Commander Gen. Ricardo Reyes said the facilities provide soldiers better tools to perform their duties and strengthen their morale while improving their performance in the fight against organized crime.
