Viking girls down Southwest to stay unbeaten

-

EL CENTRO — Fresh off their weekend tournament win in Brawley, the Holtville girls’ basketball team was back at it on Tuesday, hitting the road to face off against the Southwest Eagles in a non-league matchup.

The Vikings entered the game with a perfect 10-0 record and a perfectly large target on their backs, but

despite a somewhat sluggish first half, they were able to fire up the rockets in the second and move to 11-0 with a 45-40 win,

Nobody really seized control of the game in the first quarter, as each side had some difficulty prying the lid off of the basket.

After one, Holtville held a slim 7-4 lead.

In the second, the Eagles started getting after it, pounding the ball inside to junior center Andrea Aguilar to win the frame 17-7 and open up a 21-14 halftime lead, but they weren’t able to hold it

The Vikings used the third quarter to trim the margin to 30-27 and took care of business in the fourth, 18-10 to keep their perfecto going.

As is typical, junior Amanda Angulo was the prime point-getter for Holtville.

She finished with 16, to go with six rebounds and five steals. Supporting her were freshman Orian Anderson (10 points, five steals) and sophomore Carolina Valdes (seven points, 13 boards).

The Eagles were led by Aguilar who had a monster game, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Also contributing was Ana Garcia who had eight points and 16 rebounds of her own.

Both teams are off until Tuesday, when Holtville will be facing Mountain Empire at home and Southwest will be away against Calipatria.
