El Centro Sunsations host final IVSL meet prior to championships
EL CENTRO — On Saturday the El Centro Sunsations swim team hosted its annual invitational at the pool at Central Union High School.
The meet featured six teams — the Sunsations, the Brawley Sunstrokers, the Holtville Stingrays, the Imperial Sea Lions, the Yuma Wahoos and the Blythe Dolphins — and was the final regular season contest of this year’s Imperial Valley Swim League.
Overall the six teams fielded 152 swimmers ages 4 to 18 who competed across 124 heats.
When the waves had finally settled after five hours of competition (starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 12 p.m.) it was determined the host Sunsations had won both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, with final point totals of 322 and 333, respectively.
The Sunsations’ win was largely built on runner-up finishes, as they only finished first overall in five races, compared to 28 for Yuma.
Yuma’s golden gallery was largely owed to the dominance of the Dusek clan — Bailey, Ryan and Ayden — who combined for 14 first-place finishes all by themselves.
The Duseks aside, the day’s top individual performer may well have been Annika Mitosinka of the Imperial Sea Lions.
Not only did she win all five of her 11-12 year-old division races, she also posted times that were better than her 13-14 year-old counterparts in every instance.
Next week the 2019 Imperial Valley Swim League summer season will come to an end, with the championship meet being held in Yuma.
