Senator blames governor-elect for threats

-

A senator from Mexicali blamed Gov.-elect Jaime Bonilla for anonymous threats she has received against herself and her family.

On her Facebook page, Sen. Alejandra León Gastélum, a Mexicali member of the Workers Party Caucus, revealed a series of harsh remarks against her on social media, including a video.

“It is clear the attempt of the message,” Sen. León added. “It has the goal to damage me.”

The lawmaker, an engineer and lawyer herself who has attacked the building of the Constellation Brands brewery in southern Mexicali, said she made public such threats in order due to fear of her own safety and her daughter’s as well.

On Wednesday, when the new state lawmakers took office, León questioned the deployment of the National Guard and state police officers to suppress peaceful protests of a bill to extend Bonilla’s term to five years.

The lawmaker used in a video shared Wednesday the hashtag #AsíNoBonilla, or Not Like This Bonilla.

The senator also asked the Mexican Attorney General’s Office to solve the alleged armed assault on her brother months ago in Tecate.

“We will keep working, moving forward and speaking truth despite the threats and insults against me,” she added on her post shared Thursday.

The lawmaker wrote Friday additional posts were made on social media against her after her accusations.

Those posts accuse León of stealing money from highway tolls that are paid by users.

The senator has led a group of local residents by blocking some tolls and collecting donations from drivers.

Bonilla has not responded to the allegations.
