IID board recognizes Student Employment Program
EL CENTRO — The Imperial Irrigation District Board of Directors, during Tuesday’s regular meeting, recognized the district’s Student Employment Program.
IID has 38 college students who are employed this summer for up to 90 days between the end of the spring semester and the start of the fall semester, assisting the district in full-time work while, at the same time, learning valuable skills to help prepare them for future careers.
The relationship is beneficial for both the district and the students, said Rosa Dominguez, IID’s recruitment and selection o cer.
“The students are learning while they are doing the work,” she said. “And it’s great for the district as they are bringing in a lot of new ideas and technology, which is awesome for us and for them.”
The college students (who must meet grade point average, enrollment and employment criteria and are screened for placement) work in a variety of areas across the district, including water, energy, human resources, information technology, general services, accounting, engineering and others.
“This benefits the district quite a bit,” Dominguez said, who added that the students are considered “part of the sta .”
While most of the students hail from the local area, they represent colleges and universities throughout the region, some attending school as far as Chico State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara, among many closer schools.
The program provides the district with an opportunity to recruit and appraise students for future employment, while permitting undergraduate students to become familiar with district services.
All participants are either enrolled as full-time college students or are recent college graduates.
