Drugs seized at Highway 86 checkpoint
A 19-year-old man was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Highway 86 checkpoint for transporting a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale, the county Sheriff’s Office arrest records stated.
Miguel A. Hernandez was booked into county jail by Drug Enforcement Administration personnel and held on $1 million bail, the arrest records stated.
On Sunday, a 32-year-old Mexican national was arrested at about 11 p.m. after drugs valued at more than $2.5 million were discovered in the vehicle he was driving, the Border Patrol reported.
A canine detection team initially alerted to the tractor trailer and further inspection revealed more than 391 pounds of methamphetamine valued near $1.02 million, more than 47 pounds of heroin valued around $1.5 million and more than 5 pounds of cocaine valued at $57,954, the Border Patrol reported.
The man, drugs and truck were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Hours later, at approximately 1:50 a.m., more than $80,000 worth of narcotics was discovered in a vehicle driven by a 54-year-old man accompanied by a 37-year-old woman, the Border Patrol reported.
After a canine detection team alerted to the vehicle, further inspection allegedly revealed 5 pounds of fentanyl and 2.5 pounds of heroin hidden in the vehicle’s battery, the agency reported.
The man and woman, both U.S. citizens; the narcotics, and the vehicle were turned over to the Imperial County Sherriff’s Office Border Crime Suppression Team.
