A man with an extensive criminal history died after being shot three times in an assault against a police officer.

The events took place at 10:50 p.m. Monday at Avenida Felipe Carrillo in Ejido Michoacán de Ocampo. The deceased man was identified as José Primitivo Piña Alcántar, 44, aka “Primo.”

Mexicali police said the officer acted in apparent self-defense.

The officer was among those responding to a report of domestic violence at the home. Piña Alcántar, who was apparently intoxicated with alcohol or illegal substances, was located at the site, the police said.

Agents requested an ambulance since the subject appeared nearly incapacitated from alcohol. However, the man became aggressive and threatened officers with stones.

Agents kept their distance, but the subject began to chase them with a crowbar.

The agents had issued a warning for the subject to desist, when he threw himself against Police Supervisor Julio César Arellano Orozco, who fell to the ground.

The suspect attempted to injure the police supervisor with the crowbar, whereupon the agent responded by shooting his firearm.

Although the suspect was wounded, Piña Alcántar tried to take the weapon from the agent, who was shot in the left leg.

The agent was transferred to Almater Hospital for medical attention.

Piña Alcántar passed away at the scene.

Police reported that the dead man had a history of misdemeanors, injuring and threatening a family member, breaching child support obligations, house burglary and carrying illegal weapons.
