Meth, heroin seized at checkpoint

El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents Thursday afternoon seized methamphet­amine and black tar heroin at the Highway 111 checkpoint, a Customs and Border Protection news release stated.

The incident occurred approximat­ely 5:30 p.m., when a man driving a gray 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, along with a male passenger, approached the checkpoint for inspection.

A canine detection team alerted to the vehicle, which agents sent to secondary inspection.

A search of the vehicle revealed two black boxes containing several plastic packages hidden inside the passenger’s foot well and another in the rear cargo area.

The substance inside the packages tested positive for meth.

The total weight of the meth was

2.78 pounds.

Agents also discovered 9.7 grams of black tar heroin.

The two drugs had a combined estimated street value of $6,282.

The driver, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, and the passenger, a 38-year-old U.S. citizen, along the vehicle and drugs were turned over to Homeland Security Investigat­ions, the news release stated.
