Murder suspect’s hearing delayed

-

Dozens of young persons took part Friday in a protest outside a state courthouse to demand the indictment of a teenager accused of killing his ex-girlfriend last week.

However, the hearing was moved to Saturday. According to newspaper reports, the indictment hearing of David “Doe,” 19, was delayed by Judge Sara Perdomo, after lawyers told the court the parents of Genebit Livier Godínez were unable to attend due to depression.

Defense attorney Matías Torres Ayala requested the court hear face-to-face testimony of seven people before the judge could indict the suspect.

However, only four of the seven witnesses were present for the hearing, including two policemen, a woman whose relationship to the case was unclear and the victim’s sister.

Livier Godínez, a 20-year-old architecture student of the Autonomous University of Baja California, was found dead last week inside her vehicle in the Insurgentes neighborhood.

According to the reports, Torres Ayala also requested the presence of the victim’s parents, whom he considered “vital for the defense.”

However, prosecutors indicated that Livier

Godínez’s parents have depression and a doctor prescribed medication and rest.

Torres Ayala then asked the victim’s sister to testify. Lawyer Cuauhtémoc Castilla, who has been hired by the victim’s family for legal advice, indicated that evidence leads to a potential indictment for the equivalent of voluntary manslaughter.

On Saturday, the defense said the suspect has a neurological illness that makes him experience seizures at certain times, but neurologist Andres Saguchi denied the teenager had epilepsy.
