Aten and Clark intersection getting a facelift
IMPERIAL —Imperial City Council recently awarded a more than $480,000 contract to an El Centro firm for a road project that will widen the intersection at Aten Boulevard and Clark Road.
The council on Aug. 5 unanimously approved the $480,605.43 bid, with a 15 percent contingency, submitted by LC Paving and Sealing Inc. to do the job.
The city has scheduled a pre-construction meeting with LC Paving and Sealing for Sept. 1. Following that, a construction date will be set, and the project is expected to be completed within 65 days, pending no delays, Imperial Assistant City Manager Alexis L. Brown said Wednesday.
Once the project is finished, drivers heading north on Clark will no longer have to wait single file at the Aten intersection. Clark will be widened with a right turn lane, allowing drivers planning to head east to turn more easily onto Aten.
The project will also widen Aten to include a right turn lane to turn onto Clark.
The new lanes will cover the dirt shoulders at the intersection.
The project also consists of upgrading existing traffic signal hardware by installing new pedestrian countdown signal heads. Four-way crosswalk striping also will be added to the intersection.
Existing traffic lights, electrical boxes and street signs at the intersection will be relocated where needed.
The asphalt roads will be resurfaced, and existing road striping will be replaced with new striping.
The surrounding areas of the intersection will be re-graded. Existing sewer manholes will be lowered and raised as needed.
As part of Clark Road is within Imperial County’s jurisdiction, the city is working with the county to take possession of the road.
