All’s well that ends well

- Karen Kelley Brawley

With all the precautions we are making to our usually busy lives, it makes me think of how things were when my family came to Imperial Valley when I was in the seventh grade, and my younger brother was in the first grade.

My father was in the cattle business and had been coming to the Valley for years when he and my uncle decided to try their luck in a pig farm in Calipatria. Well, our family went along with this new venture and moved lock, stock and barrel to this small town. It was a little tough for my brother and me at first adapting to this move since we had lived in Los Angeles before this move in a lovely home with all amenities, but we were game, and soon adapted to this new life.

However, my mother had a hard time adjusting to this new life, but was spunky to make a go of it. Right about the time of our move, a best-selling memoir came out called “The Egg and I.” My mother read it, and immediately identified with it as if she was living “The Egg and I” herself. It was about a young couple moving to a chicken farm, which went right along with our move.

Anyway, it became a laughing matter, and we joked about it for years. Things weren’t so bad, and we enjoyed the outdoor life. Being able to go out to the ranch and riding horses was a new part of our life.

We lived in Calipat for only about a year and a half, and then we moved to Brawley. I really blossomed in this move and made life-long friends. I might add that’s when I met my husband. After high school, we went our separate ways, but when he got out of the Army, we got together again, got married and that was 63 years ago. So all’s well that ends well.
