Mexicali City Council is addressing the impact of a recent Mexican Supreme Court decision regarding a fee paid by energy customers to cover the cost of street lighting.

Justices determined the fee, known as DAP, was determined to be in violation of Mexican law

Also, justices decided the fee infringes on congressional jurisdiction.

Mexicali Mayor Marina Avila said the City Council is reviewing the implications of the court ruling.

The DAP fee was approved years ago by the council in order to collect funds to pay for street lighting.

The mayor added the city treasurer and the tax collector are also reviewing the ruling.

The city collects every year 120 million pesos, or about $ 6 million.

Energy users pay about 90 cents in DAP fees every month.
