New sidewalk project awarded in Holtville
HOLTVILLE — Construction is set to begin on a new sidewalk along Ninth Street, between Beale and Ash avenues, here.
The Holtville City Council on Monday unanimously approved to award a construction contract so that the Ninth Street Sidewalk Improvements Project could begin.
Construction is expected to take about 70 calendar days, tentatively beginning Feb. 1 and ending April 12.
Currently, there is sidewalk on the south part of this portion of Ninth, but the north end includes only short section of sidewalk, starting at Beale. After that, there’s only dirt and gravel until Ash.
On the north part of this portion, however, there is only a small portion of sidewalk, starting at Beale. Once this sidewalk ends, dirt and gravel is present until Ash. The sidewalk will be built over this dirt and gravel.
The project will also include installation of 6-inch curb and gutter along the new interior sidewalk edge, and bring new asphalt rubber hot mix pavement within the native earth area.
This portion of Ninth is typically used by students as a walking path to and from Finley Elementary School and Holtville Middle School, which are both less than a mile away.
The project’s total cost is $374,000 — $325,300 for construction and $48,700 for construction management.
The construction contract went to Rove Engineering, while Dynamic Consulting Engineers Inc., was selected for construction management.
To fund the project, the city received $331,000 from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality program, which is administered by Caltrans District 11.
The city also allocated $43,000 from its local Transportation Agency funds to cover the remaining cost.
