Dead body found, arrest made during traffic stop

-

A dead body was found and one arrest was made during a traffic stop Sunday night, county scanner traffic said.

The incident began as a failure to yield and turned into a foot pursuit, after which an arrest was made.

About 10:53 p.m. Sunday, the Brawley Police Department was notified via a license plate reader of a stolen vehicle that had just passed through the area of Cesar Chavez and Main Street in Brawley.

Another license plate reader eventually registered the 2018 Dodge Journey, bearing California license plates, headed northbound on North Eighth Street, also in Brawley.

An officer safety alert was issued because the vehicle was reported to be carrying a firearm and ammo at the time it was stolen. The firearm and ammo were registered to the owner of the vehicle, according to scanner traffic.

The Dodge reportedly headed northbound on Highway 111 toward Calipatria.

About 11:03 p.m., police attempted a “hot stop” on the vehicle in the area of Highway 111 and Bowles Road, which is at the south entrance of Calipatria.

The Dodge reportedly took off after the attempted stop. Police began pursuing the vehicle northbound into the city about 70 miles per hour.

The Dodge reportedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 111 and Main Street. It came to a stop about 11:04 p.m in the area of Barbara Street and Sorensen Avenue. Two subjects reportedly left the vehicle and began running eastbound.

Police detained the driver of the vehicle about four minutes later.

At 11:34 p.m., police reported searching an area north of California Street, with no sight of the second suspect.

It was immediately unknown whether police caught second suspect.

Meanwhile, an officer checked the stolen Dodge and requested an ambulance about 11:11 p.m. after finding an apparent corpse in the back seat.

An AMR ambulance arrived at the scene. Emergency responders confirmed the body was deceased by 11:18 p.m.

A deputy coroner responded to the scene about 12:26 a.m. Monday to investigate the body and cleared the scene by 3:32 a.m., Imperial County Sheriff’s Office activity logs said.

Southbound traffic, at Sorensen and California, was temporarily blocked off about 11:15 p.m.

No further information was available.
