Suspects in air gun shooting remain at large
BRAWLEY — The suspects responsible for an unprovoked drive-by air gun shooting, which occurred Friday afternoon and left an 18-year-old man hospitalized, remain at large.
David Angulo was walking from his home on North Eighth Street to Circle K, 1691 E. Main St., about 2:30 p.m., when the shooting occurred. A car reportedly pulled up near him as he was walking near the Brawley Family apartments, just north of the Circle K.
Angulo recalled there were two guys in the car — one who was driving and another in the passenger seat.
He said the passenger pulled out a brown-andblack airsoft rifle.
“And he shoots me from behind and gets me on the right side, near the knee,” Angulo said.
Once he realized he was shot, Angulo said he attempted to get a better look at the vehicle.
He wasn’t able to get a good view of the license plate, but described the vehicle as a white Toyota Corolla.
He then managed to make it to Circle K, where he contacted 911.
Angulo spoke with Brawley Police officers, and provided a brief description of the vehicle.
The department dispatched three units to look for the suspect vehicle.
“They didn’t find them,” he said.
The suspects remain at large, Brawley Police Cmdr. Brett Houser confirmed Tuesday.
“We don’t have any further information at this time,” Houser said. “An older model white sedan fled the area. The suspect was not identified at the time of call. Other leads are being investigated by the Brawley Investigations Division.”
From the scene Friday, Angulo’s parents transported him to Pioneers Memorial Hospital, where he had X-rays done.
“And it showed that I had 2 BBs inside my leg,” he said.
Angulo was given Tylenol for the pain, and underwent a minor surgery to extract the BBs.
Angulo said he hadn’t seen the vehicle before.
The occupants were wearing face masks, he said.
“I don’t know what the motive was for shooting me,” he said.
Friday was the first time Angulo had walked this route.
“That’s the problem — I’ve never walked to Circle K,” he said. “First time I’ve walked, and that happened.”
Angulo’s mother, Claudia Angulo, made a Facebook post on her profile regarding the incident. The post had been shared more than 460 times as of Tuesday evening.
