May the force be with you

- ERIKA ENIGK

Along time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a man named George Lucas had an idea for a movie. That movie was a big hit, so more movies were made, and today, there are also books, video games, TV shows and toys. You might have guessed by now that we’re talking about “Star Wars.”

About George Lucas

You might be surprised to know that George Lucas didn’t dream of making movies when he was a kid. He wanted to be a racecar driver. But an accident when he was a teenager made him change his mind. He had always loved science fiction and comic books, and he became interested in movies, so he studied film. He wanted to tell an adventure story, so eventually he wrote “Star Wars.” It came out way back in 1977, but it still remains a big hit.

The story

The first movie, “A New Hope,” actually started in the middle of the whole story. In that story, Luke Skywalker is a young farmer who trains to become a Jedi and fight the evil Darth Vader. Along the way, he meets Princess Leia, Han Solo and other characters, and he learns some interesting things about himself and his family. Other movies focus on other characters, and we get to learn a lot about how other characters came to be a part of the story.

Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day is on May 4 every year. The reason is that a catchphrase in the “Star Wars” movies is “May the Force be with you,” so making it “May the FOURTH be with you” makes May 4 a fun day to celebrate the movies and all other things “Star Wars.” You might find events in your community or things to watch or activities to do. If you love “Star Wars,” find something fun to do. If you’ve never seen any of the “Star Wars” movies or TV, May 4 is a great day to begin.
