Taking pictures is a great way to remember a special occasion, people or even a normal day. Follow these tips to get started taking great photos.

● Hold your camera steady

One of the hardest things to do when you first start taking photos is staying still. But if you move while you’re taking a photo, your photo could come out blurry. If this happens to you, try spreading your feet wide or leaning against something so you can be sure you’re standing still.

● Take pictures of everything

Many people take pictures of their family or friends, or important objects. But you can take a great photo of almost anything! Go on a walk and look for a cool rock or a pretty flower. Take a picture of a cloud or a squirrel or a chalk drawing you did on the sidewalk.

● Look at the background

Let’s say you want to take a picture of your little sister. Which do you think would look better—a picture of her in her messy room, or a picture of her in the flower garden? Both could be interesting! The messy room might show her personality and look like a little slice of life in your house. The flower garden picture will be pretty and colorful and not have her dirty laundry in it. Pictures tell a story, so look at everything around you and decide what you want that story to be.

● Take pictures from different angles

Find something to take a picture of and try it from all different directions. How does a tree in your yard look straight on? How does it look when you lie underneath it? What about when you zoom in close to one branch? What if you walk far away? Trying different things can give you a unique view and some unique photos.

● Take a LOT of pictures

Have you ever gotten a school picture taken or sat for a family portrait? The photographer doesn’t finish the job with just one click of the camera. A person might blink their eyes, or a gust of wind might come and change what you’re looking at for a second. Click away and then pick the best from a group of photos. When you look at them, notice why you like one better than another. That will help you take great pictures in the future.
