Student released to caseworker after altercation
A student at J.W. Oakley Elementary School on Friday morning was turned over to a caseworker after he reportedly got into a physical altercation with a staff member.
After the arrival of a police officer, the student, an 11-year-old boy, was taken to Imperial County Behavioral Health Services in El Centro, where he was turned over to a caseworker.
A reporting party called the Brawley Police Department about 8:44 a.m. Friday and reported there was a physical altercation between a staff member and a student at the school, according to county scanner traffic.
Four minutes later, a BPD officer arrived at the scene and requested an ambulance. The ambulance arrived at the front entrance of the school, but it is unclear whether any medical aid was rendered.
The student’s mother eventually arrived at the school and spoke with the officer, who ultimately decided to refer the student to Behavioral Health.
It was unknown whether the student was transported by the officer or his parent. However, the officer arrived at Behavioral Health and turned the student over to the caseworker by 10:19 a.m.
When asked if any administrative action would be taken against the student or the involved staff member, Brawley Elementary School District Superintendent Richard Rundhaug replied that both the student’s and the employee’s privacy rights prevented him from providing a direct answer.
“Normal protocols are being followed and action taken falls within guidelines we use for this type of incident,” Rundhaug said.
BPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding this incident.
