Library celebrates Halloween family with parking lot event
CALEXICO — Camarena Memorial Library on Heber Avenue celebrated Halloween on Thursday, and welcomed families to do the same during its Family Night in the Parking Lot event.
The occasion saw more than 180 kids dressed in Halloween costumes.
The library encouraged kids and families to wear costumes to the event, which featured arts and crafts, lawn games, stories and books.
Victoria Sanchez, 7, of Imperial, was among the evening’s participants. She used markers provided to do a large drawing.
A decorated photo backdrop was set up in the entrance of the library.
After having their photo taken, kids were handed candy by a library staff member.
Maisy Martinez, 4, of El Centro, waited in line some time to pose with her baby brother. The siblings were dressed in “101 Dalmations” themed costumes. Maisy was dressed as Cruella De Vil while her brother was a dalmatian.
Informational booths from agencies such as the Calexico Police Department were also set up in the library’s parking lot.
At the CPD booth, Abel Lopez, 12, of Brawley, and other kids were able to investigate the inside of a patrol car.
While walking around the library with his mother, 2-year-old Nicolas Chiquete, of El Centro, was surprised when he encountered a library staff member who, like himself, was dressed as Jack Skellington.
Library director Lizeth Legaspi and other library staff wore matching Harry Potter costumes.
This was the second Family Night event Camarena has held since pandemic restrictions on public gatherings were lifted. The first was on Sept. 16.
