The Fair is characterized by smiling faces, the smell of fried everything, and captivating lights.

As the Imperial Valley is hosting its 115th installment of the California Mid Winter Fair and Fiesta, the Southwest High School students delightedly share what their favorite fair activities are this year.

The California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta was held on the days of March 3 to March 12 this 2023.

Sophomore Gabriel Ruiz said that his favorite aspects about the Fair are going on the rides and eating food. Specifically, he said he likes the funnel cake over the other grub.

Senior Miabella

Adame, in a similar fashion, said that her favorite part about the Fair was partaking in the carnival rides. Adame said that her favorite ride, however, was the Zipper.

For Ruiz, his favorite rides at the fairground are the Pharaoh and the Zipper.

Senior Emily De La Rosa said that she particularly enjoys the rides over other activities offered. She said her favorite ride was the Zipper.

“I like my heart falling out my chest,” De La

Rosa said.

Although this isn’t his favorite aspect of the Fair, senior Ashton Huddleston said that his favorite amusement ride was the log ride that they used to have when he was a kid.

“I don’t think they have it anymore but it was a little log ride with water,” Huddleston said. “It was pretty cool. Either that or the Gravitron.”

Apart from fun and games, the Fair also gives its fairgoers lasting memories. For Adame, a cherished memory is when she tried fried Oreos for the first time, she said.

“They were really good; I have to eat them every time I go now,” Adame said.

For Ruiz, a memory from the Fair that stuck, he said, was when he vomited behind one of the rides.

Besides the rides, food, and entertainment, another aspect about the Fair is the agriculture showcase that is held every year which displays a variety of livestock.

Huddleston’s favorite thing to do at the Fair is petting the pigs, he said. Huddleston likes this over other activities because ‘’ they smell funny and they have funny hair. Prickly hair.”

He said his cherished memory is when he got to walk in the pen and hang out with the “wonderful, beautiful even” cows.

For De La Rosa, she said a memory from the fair that she holds dear to her heart is when a pig licked her one time when she was little. “It was very slimy,” she said.

The annual fair represents a variety of things to people from the Valley. To some, such as Huddleston, it means expensive food and “getting ripped off ” he said.

“I mean, I love the Fair but definitely expensive and losing money,” Huddleston said.

De La Rosa said that, to her, the Fair is a representation of the Valley coming together to have fun

Adame said that she thinks the Fair represents unity in the county. “It’s just an all-around fun time, you know? So it’s a reminder to have fun,” she said.
