Wilson Junior High recognizes Teacher, Counselor of the Year
EL CENTRO — With a surprise assembly, Wilson Junior High (WJHS) School AVID and physical education teacher, Dennis Bourland and school social worker Lillian Vera were honored by the school community for being named the 2023 Association of California School Administrators (ASCA) Imperial County Teacher of the Year and Counselor of the Year, respectively.
The ACSA awards are given annually and chosen by the organization, with ASCA Region 18 “representing education leaders in San Diego and Imperial Counties,” according to its social media page.
With encouraging words on signs, the WJHS community cheered for Bourland and Vera at the school’s gymnasium on Friday, March 10.
“You have awesome teachers, and staff members that care about you,” Wilson Principal Maria Ambriz said.
Ambriz said that among the requirements to be considered for the awards include experience of at least five years working in education. She said WJHS seeks “well-rounded employees who are leaders, care about their students and have a heart for their campus community such as parents and colleagues.”
Ambriz acknowledged the work of all of school staff, and especially recognizing Bourland and Vera.
“This is your moment, your day.
You have earned it, congratulations,” Ambriz said.
Bourland, who was recognized as Teacher of the Year, has worked at WJHS for 25 years. He said he was honored to receive the award.
“(This award means) a lot of hard work, dedication to students, and that your work doesn’t go unnoticed,” Bourland said.
With excitement, Bourland told Wilson students to keep working hard and to find and know their purpose.
“My purpose is these kids,” he said. Vera, who was named Counselor of the Year, was surprised by the event. She said she was humbled to be recognized by the academic community.
“It means so much to be recognized by so many people,” Vera said.
Vera has worked at WJHS for seven years and considered this recognition a result of team efforts.
“We are all in this together,” Vera said. “We make each other better by just being part of this family.”
WJHS Assistant Principal Gerardo Sanchez considers these distinction as “well deserved” for his fellow staff members.
“Mrs. Vera does a lot for her community, students, and staff members,” Sanchez said. “Mr. Bourland is so energetic, positive and he knows how to motivate students.”
Sanchez said this is the first time two WJHS staff members are being recognized by ACSA at the same time.
“I think that shows dedication and commitment that our staff has with our students in the community,” Sanchez said.
