In the wake of personal tragedy, Jim Carrey’s partying goes too far
The evening started out like any other: just a couple of friends hanging out. But soon, Jim Carrey and his pal — a prominent NYC businessman — welcomed one of the guy’s beautiful 26-year-old female friends to the mix as they partied at the man’s Manhattan apartment in May. “They were drinking,” a source close to the woman exclusively tells In Touch, “and then they started doing cocaine.”
Things quickly got even more wild. “Jim is a really strange person,” says the source, explaining that the 54-year-old comedy star made a bizarre proposition to the party girl. “He asked to do a line of coke off her back,” claims the source. “She said OK, so he did, but now he’s been contacting her constantly at weird hours. She thinks he’s crazy” and wonders about the extent of his drug usage.
Jim’s been struggling since ex-girlfriend Cathriona White killed herself in September, just days after they broke up. Four bottles of prescription medication were found with the 30-year-old makeup artist’s lifeless body. The drugs were the sleep aid Ambien, the narcotic painkiller Percocet, the blood-pressure and antianxiety drug Propranolol and the antinausea drug Zofran. Three of those prescriptions reportedly belonged to Jim. “He’s been spiraling downward and partying ever since,” says the source.
And even before the tragedy, Jim had long battled depression. “There are peaks, there are valleys. … It feels like a low level of despair you live in,” he said in 2004 when he revealed he’d previously spent “a long time” on Prozac. He reportedly tried the hallucinogen DMT, which has been nicknamed “The God Drug,” and in 2014, he told Howard Stern he’s “had an addiction to pot from time to time. A compulsion to it.”
Now he seems desperate for companionship. After the incident in May, Jim has tried to stay in contact with the party girl, who comes from a wealthy family and was linked to a married celebrity when she was a teen. “He has her number and I’ve seen the messages between them. He blows up her phone and annoys her. There are texts like, ‘ What are you doing? What are you up to? Where are you? Come over,’” says the source. “He Facetimes her when she’s doing errands and stuff.”
But she’s not interested in repeating their cocaine-fueled first meeting. “She’s distanced herself from Jim,” adds the source, “because he’s in such a bad state.” ◼
