Justin Theroux was looking good. Impossibly cool in faded black jeans, gray boots, amber-tinted aviator shades and his favorite leather jacket, Mr. Jennifer Aniston strutted through France’s Charles de Gaulle Airport on March 4 bound for Paris Fashion Week. But instead of bringing his wife with him to the romantic City of Light, Justin brought a buddy — leaving Jen all alone back in LA.
Well, not quite. Twelve years after her divorce from Brad Pitt, Jen has secretly reunited with the man she once admitted she would continue to love “for the rest of my life” — even after he bailed on their marriage after falling for his Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star, Angelina Jolie. But now, six months into Angelina and Brad’s nasty divorce and custody battle, it’s Jen, 48, who’s getting the last laugh. Angelina has learned the exes are in contact, and she’s enraged. “In Angie’s view,” an insider tells In Touch, “this move by Brad to reconnect with Jen is an act of war.”
Jen has long been a trigger for Angelina. “It makes her absolutely nuts that Jen is so beloved by the public,” says the insider. “This is Angie’s biggest nightmare because it just reminds everyone that she broke up the Hollywood golden couple.” Even though Angelina, 41, got what she wanted — she and Brad, 53, both admitted in 2008 that they’d fallen in love while he was still married — Jen still haunted them. “She was always the third person in Brad and Angie’s relationship,” adds the insider. “Angie can’t believe that Brad would do this knowing how she feels about Jen.”
Angelina definitely doesn’t want Jen anywhere near her and Brad’s kids. “As Angie and Brad’s divorce talks continue, she’s demanding that Brad agree to never have their children around Jen. Brad thinks the request is off the wall and irrational,” says the insider. “He isn’t going to cave in to Angie’s ridiculous demand that [Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8] never be around Jen. Angie is the one who filed for divorce, not him. And she will have to live with the consequences.”
This isn’t the first time Brad and Jen reconnected since their divorce — or that Angelina went ballistic. In July at their family compound in LA’S Los Feliz neighborhood, Angelina caught Brad “finishing up a phone call with Jen in the bedroom, talking in a low voice,” a friend exclusively told In Touch at the time. “He said he was just checking up on Jen because it had been two months since Jen’s mom, Nancy, died, and he wanted to see how she was doing.” Angelina, the friend added, was thunderstruck: “She refused to listen and went into a rage.”
This time around, Brad and Jen are not only talking on the phone but also texting each other. “Jen feels really bad for everything that Angie is putting him through,” says the insider. “She knows that not being able to be with the kids [full-time] is tearing Brad apart.”
Jen must enjoy knowing that Angelina is stewing over the whole thing. “Angie broke up her marriage, and now Brad is coming back to her after all these years for friendship and support,” says the insider. For Jen, it’s the ultimate revenge. “It’s definitely vindication for her because it just confirms that Angie stole her husband from her.” It’s also inspired a dangerous game of “what if,” adds the insider.
