Celebs like Ashley Greene and Carly Rae Jepsen try out lighter hues

When it comes to summer hair slay, stars are seeing the light, but some are better left in the dark

FROM RED HAIR

“Auburn locks pulled out the red tones in Emma Stone’s skin while the warm tones in her newly golden-blond strands neutralized them,” says colorist Debi Dumas, who’s worked with Candace Cameron Bure and Chelsea Handler. For similar color: Apply a bleach (like Wella Color Charm Powder Lightener, $22, sallybeauty.com) from roots to ends, let sit according to box instructions; rinse. Then use a violet shampoo (like Not Your Mother’s Blonde Moment Treatment Shampoo, $6, target.com) once a week to cancel out any brassiness.

FROM BROWN HAIR

“Ashley Greene is a good example of less is more,“says Dumas. “When the golden tones are highlights in brown hair, they’re like subtle hits of sun-kissed color, but when the bright hue is all over, it looks fake and casts a yellow tinge that makes skin look sallow.” The fix: Switch to an ashy blond (like Revlon Colorsilk Beautiful Color in Dark Ash Blonde, $3, target.com). “The cooler tones eliminate the yellow for a more natural-looking shade of blond that blends better with bronze skin.”

FROM BLACK HAIR

“A mix of gold and platinum highlights added instant dimension to Carly Rae Jepsen’s flat, wig-like black hair,” says Dumas. For similar color: Mix equal parts bleach (like Agebeautiful Crème Lightener, $7) and developer (like Agebeautiful Crème 20 Volume Developer, $3, both at sallybeauty.com); apply all over hair, cover with a shower cap and rinse after 30 minutes. Then apply a platinum blond (like L’oréal Paris Superior Preference Glam Lights in Light to Medium Blonde, $13, ulta.com) to 1-inch sections of hair, let sit 35 minutes; rinse.
