Friends fear Kanye West is headed for another breakdown as his behavior grows more erratic

Those who know Kanye West best weren’t surprised when his wife, Kim Kardashian, rushed the rapper to the hospital, where he was treated for the flu on July 22. Over the next week, he began making disturbing statements on Twitter. “I know how it feels to want to take your life back into your own hands even if it means taking your own life,” he tweeted on July 27 after watching a documentary on Alexander Mcqueen, who died by suicide. Two days later, he went on a 12-post spree, riffing on pride and love in the span of an hour. “Kanye has been working nonstop, burning the candle at both ends,” says a source. “He’s staying up all night and not caring for himself.”

Physically or mentally. The hospital visit came just 10 days after his late mother Donda’s birthday and amid reports that his father, Ray, is being treated for prostate cancer. Loved ones couldn’t help but be reminded of his scary 2016 meltdown, which occurred shortly after the anniversary of Donda’s death, was preceded by volatile public rants and led to an eight-day stay at LA’S UCLA Medical Center. “Any milestone relating to Donda seems to trigger Kanye’s emotions,” says an insider. After that harrowing 2016 experience, Kanye, 41, revealed he’s been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (which he claims is “not a disability [ but] a superpower”) and confessed that he was also “addicted to opioids.” In recent months, “his behavior has become more erratic,” says the insider, “and Kim is terrified of history repeating itself.”

Recording music also seems to magnify his issues. “Kanye is a perfectionist and

gets angry and frustrated with himself if he suffers from writer’s block,” says the insider. “He spends up to 20 hours a day in his studio. He just doesn’t know when to switch off!”

Even a change of scenery couldn’t help calm him. Kanye spent weeks recording in Jackson Hole, Wyo., in the spring, and “Kim prayed that ditching Hollywood to spend time in the countryside would help rehabilitate her husband,” says the insider. But according to the source, that wasn’t the case: “In the weeks following the trip, he became more and more unhinged.”

Publicly, Kim continues to pretend everything is fine. When Kanye was in Wyoming, she visited and shared idyllic, tranquil shots of the family walking around in open fields with snow-capped mountains behind them. Then, two days after her husband’s hospital visit, she posted a photo of their daughter North, 5, kissing Kanye, but later admitted it was taken more than a month earlier. “Kanye had a huge smile on his face,” notes a friend. “It gave the impression that that’s his demeanor these days, but it’s not. Some of his behavior is just downright bizarre. Kanye talks to himself constantly, says he’s speaking to his higher power. The kids [North, Saint, 2, and 6-month-old Chicago] just laugh at him. They think he’s joking with them.”

For Kim, it’s no laughing matter. “She’s at her wit’s end,” says the insider. “She wants to be the supportive wife, but never knows what’s around the corner when it comes to Kanye’s unpredictable behavior. There’s only so much she can take. There’s been talk of a divorce, and I can really see it happening.” ◼
