20 Years Later… FINALLY! THE TRUTH ABOUT JFK JR.'S TRAGIC DEATH

HOW THE CRASH THAT KILLED JOHN F. KENNEDY JR. AND WIFE CAROLYN BESSETTE KENNEDY COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED — PLUS THE SECRET THEY WERE HIDING FROM THE WORLD

-

arolyn Bessette Kennedy had no desire to get on the plane. The statuesque blond beauty had only been married to political scion John F. Kennedy Jr. for close to three years, but their honeymoon was long over thanks to fights over everything from drug use to cheating. And so Carolyn was not up for celebrating the wedding of John’s cousin Rory in Hyannis Port, Mass., on July 17, 1999. “She wasn’t in the mood,” J. Randy Taraborrelli, author of The Kennedy Heirs: John, Caroline, and the New Generation — A Legacy of Triumph and Tragedy, tells In Touch. “I think we can all identify — a family wedding, you’ve got to be ready for that.” To encourage the former Calvin Klein fashion publicist to go, her sister Lauren Bessette, an investment banker, told Carolyn she’d accompany the couple on the Piper Saratoga that John planned to pilot on the eve of the nuptials. As Edward Klein, author of The Kennedy Curse, has revealed, “Lauren offered to fly along with the couple as far as Martha’s Vineyard.… ‘Come on,’ she said, ‘it’ll be fun.’ ”

It was, in fact, a tragedy. As a shocked world found out the following day, John’s plane crashed in the water off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard just after 9:40 p.m. on July 16, killing John, 38, Carolyn, 33, and Lauren, 34. Now, on the 20th anniversary of the heartbreaking disaster, new investigations have uncovered previously unrevealed specifics about the couple’s relationship — as well as their last moments alive. Among them: Friends believe Carolyn may have been pregnant when she perished.
