The director of San Bernardino County’s Public Health department will retire Saturday, handing over control of the department that has coordinated much of the county’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Corwin Porter has worked for the county for 32 years and directed the department since May, when longtime director Trudy Raymundo resigned.

Porter’s re- tirement was long planned, county officials said.

“I feel like I may be leaving just a little bit too early, but the timing was right for my family, so that resulted in the decision to retire now,” Porter said during a ceremony honoring him at the county Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday, adding that he looks forward to spending time with his eight grandchildren.

Porter previously served as as

sistant public health director and as chief of the department’s Environmental Health Services Division. Before San Bernardino County, he worked one year for Riverside County.

Board Chairman Curt Hagman said Porter’s leadership was pivotal in the aftermath of the Dec. 2, 2015, terrorist attack and during the pandemic.

“Corwin has worked tirelessly to protect the health of our county community for more than three decades, and for the past year he has been the calm and steady voice of the county’s effort to overcome COVID-19,” Hagman said in a written statement.

The board appointed Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Andrew Goldfrach, who has led the county’s COVID-19 vaccination task force, to serve as interim public health director.
