Pederson powers Giants to rout, sweep of Nationals

Joc Pederson homered twice, doubled and drove in three runs to help the visiting San Francisco Giants rout the Washington Nationals 12-3 on Sunday for the series sweep.

Pederson moved to the leadoff spot after Mike Yastrzemsk­i was placed on the COVID-19 list Sunday morning. He hit a home run to start the game and again leading off the seventh.

The Giants are 7-3 on this road trip, with a game left in Milwaukee today. Wilmer Flores added three RBI singles for San Francisco.

Starter Logan Webb (2-1) struggled early, but ended up allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six over 6 2/3 innings.

Washington has lost five straight. Yadiel Hernandez homered, singled and drove in all of the Nationals’ three runs. Joan Adon (1-3) pitched four-plus innings and was charged with five runs on six hits.

YANKEES 10, GUARDIANS 2 » Gerrit Cole bounced back from the shortest start of his career, Anthony Rizzo homered and New York pounded Cleveland to complete a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium.

Cole (1-0) struck out nine over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, and Rizzo’s two-run drive in the first inning tied him for the AL lead with five homers. New York won for the fifth time in six games.

The Yankees righthande­r lasted just 1 2/3 innings in his previous start against Detroit, tying his career high with five walks.

Cleveland’s Aaron Civale (0-1) allowed six earned runs in three innings.

REDS 4, CARDINALS 1 » Former first-round draft pick Nick Lodolo got his first major league win as host Cincinnati beat St. Louis to end an 11-game skid.

Colin Moran drove in two runs for the Reds, who had been 0-4 at home this year and had not won anywhere since April 10.

Lodolo (1-2) allowed three hits, struck out seven and walked none in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Adam Wainwright (2-2) allowed four runs, eight hits and three walks in five-plus innings.

Tylor Megill threw 6 2/3 impressive innings and New York beat host Arizona.

The Mets took two of three against the D-backs for their fifth straight series win to start the season.

It was another good showing for New York’s starting pitching, which entered with an 8-2 record and a 2.44 ERA. The righthande­d Megill (3-0) gave up two runs on four hits, walking one. He struck out seven, at times overpoweri­ng the Diamondbac­ks with a fastball that sat in the 9697 mph range all afternoon.

Arizona got another good start from veteran lefthander Madison Bumgarner, who gave up one unearned run over five innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. The four-time All-Star has a 1.00 ERA through his first four outings.

Eric Lauer struck out a career-high 13 over six innings, Christian Yelich hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth and Milwaukee won at Philadelph­ia.

Lauer and Aaron Nola took no-decisions in a pitchers’ duel. Nola gave up one hit and struck out nine in seven innings.

The Brewers finally broke through in the ninth against Corey Knebel (0-1). Jace Peterson singled leading off and moved to third on Andrew McCutchen’s one-out single. Yelich then hit a sac fly to left field.

Lauer, who gave up five hits and walked one, joined Teddy Higuera as the only lefties in Brewers history to strike out 13 in a game. ASTROS 8, BLUE JAYS 7, 10 INNINGS » Rookie Jeremy Peña hit a two-run homer in the 10th to lift host Houston past Toronto and avoid a sweep.

The Astros snapped a four-game skid and ended Toronto’s four-game winning streak.

Kyle Tucker was on second as the automatic runner with one out when Peña connected off closer Jordan Romano (10) for a drive to center field. Romano had converted 31 save chances in a row.

Bo Bichette started the Toronto 10th on second before Bryan Abreu (1-0) walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled to make it 7-6.

Zack Collins hit a threerun homer in the sixth and Gurriel added a solo home run for Toronto.

TWINS 6, WHITE SOX 4, 10 INNINGS » Byron Buxton hit his second homer of the game, a 469-foot, three-run drive that overcame a 10thinning deficit and lifted Minnesota over Chicago.

Buxton hit a two-run, opposite-field homer to right in the seventh against Aaron Bummer that tied it 3-3.

After Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single in the 10th off Joe Smith (1-0), Liam Hendriks (0-2) walked José Godoy with one out in the bottom half after automatic runner Nick Gordon began the inning on second.

Hendriks fell behind 3-1 in the count, and Buxton drove a fastball into the left-field second deck for the longest game-ending home run since MLB Statcast started tracking in 2015.

RAYS 5, RED SOX 2 » Shane McClanahan beat visiting Boston to become Tampa Bay’s first starting pitcher to get a win this season.

The Red Sox scored twice in the first against McClanahan, but pinch-hitter Ji-Man Choi had a tying, two-run double as the Rays rallied for three runs in the fifth.

McClanahan (1-1) pitched shutout ball from the second through the sixth.

MARLINS 5, BRAVES 4 » Garrett Cooper had three hits and two RBIs, Avisaíl García hit a go-ahead double in the fifth inning and Miami took two of three at home against Atlanta.

Atlanta trailed 5-1 in the ninth before Matt Olson’s sacrifice fly and Austin Riley’s two-run homer off Tanner Scott.

The Marlins’ Jesús Luzardo (1-1) allowed one run and two hits in five innings.

ROCKIES 6, TIGERS 2 » Randal Grichuk had three hits, including his first home run of the season, and Colorado won at Detroit.

Charlie Blackmon had four hits, scored twice and drove in two for Colorado.

Chad Kuhl (2-0) allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

ATHLETICS 2, RANGERS 0 » Cole Irvin and three relievers combined on a fourhitter, Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run homer in the fourth, and Oakland defeated visiting Texas.

Irvin (2-1) gave up one hit in five innings. The lefthander didn’t allow a hit after Marcus Semien’s infield single leading off the game.
