White Sox's Jimenez out 6 to 8 weeks

-

The Chicago White Sox placed outfielder Eloy Jiménez on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right hamstring strain, an injury that is expected to cause him to miss six to eight weeks.

Jiménez was injured Saturday trying to beat out a ground ball.

“I think the big thing is (today) when he goes to Chicago and really gets an extensive exam,” manager Tony La Russa said. “We’ll hope for the early indications.”

An update is expected to be provided Tuesday when the White Sox open a seven-game homestand.

A ruptured left pectoral tendon limited the oft-injured Jiménez to 55 games last season. A Silver Slugger Award winner in 2020, he is hitting .222 through 11 games this season with one home run and seven RBIs.

Chicago has eight players on the injured list: Jiménez, pitchers Ryan Burr (right shoulder strain), Garrett Crochet (Tommy John surgery), Joe Kelly (right biceps nerve), Lance Lynn (right knee tendon tear), Jonathan Stiever (right lat surgery), third baseman Yoan Moncada (right oblique strain) and outfielder Yermin Mercedes (left hand fracture).

Conforto won’t play in 2022 after surgery

Free-agent outfielder Michael Conforto will miss the entire season after having surgery on his right shoulder.

Conforto’s agent, Scott Boras, confirmed that Conforto had surgery last week performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, head physician for the Dodgers and Rams.

Conforto is expected to make a full recovery and return to the field in spring training next year, Boras said.

The 29-year-old spent his first 6½ major league seasons with the New York Mets before becoming a free agent last fall. He turned down an $18.4 million qualifying offer from the Mets in November.

Last month, Boras said Conforto got hurt while training in January during Major League Baseball’s labor lockout.

Conforto, an All-Star in 2017, had a disappointing 2021 season, batting .232 with 14 homers, 55 RBIs and a .729 OPS in 125 games.

He was drafted 10th overall by the Mets in 2014 out of Oregon State and helped them reach the 2015 World Series after making his big league debut in late July that year. He is a .255 career hitter with 132 home runs, 396 RBIs and an .824 OPS.

The left-handed hitter set career highs with 33 homers and 92 RBIs in 2019.

Giants’ Yastrzemski positive for COVID-19

San Francisco Giants outfielder Mike Yastrzemski was placed on the COVID-19 list after testing positive for the virus.

Yastrzemski, 31, is batting .267 with one homer and three RBIs in 14 games this season. He has begun to heat up of late, however, going 7 for 15 with a homer and two RBIs in his past four games.

The grandson of Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, the younger Yastrzemski is batting .256 with 57 homers and 164 RBIs in 316 career games with the Giants. He hit a career-high 25 homers last season.

Padres’ Voit lands on the injured list

The San Diego Padres placed first baseman/designated hitter Luke Voit on the 10-day injured list with right biceps tendon soreness.

Voit, acquired from the New York Yankees on March 18, is batting just .143 with no homers and five RBIs in 13 games this season.
