Late-term abortion

- — Marilyn Boehm, Huntington Beach — James McKellar, Arcadia — Jim Harley, Banning

Re “Prop. 1 kills all limits on abortion” (July 10):

As is the usual myth surrounding abortions, Jon Fleischman posits that passing Prop. 1 would result in babies being aborted right up till the moment before birth. Statistics show that fewer than 1% of abortions take place in the third trimester.

They generally happen for one of two reasons: medical concerns such as the life of the mother or lethal fetal abnormalities not detected earlier in the pregnancy, or barriers to earlier abortion due to a lack of abortion providers or to funds to pay for medical care. Although these late-term abortions are extremely rare, they are the main reason given by many people, including Fleischman, to get others to oppose all abortions.

Please report the facts, not wild claims, about this very difficult and devastating decision that some women have to make.

Rising price of gas

Re “Gas shock fears sparks Russian oil price cap plan” (July 10):

So, our President Joe Biden finally wants to help the American public and try to do something about the huge jump in the price of gas at the pump? Really, Mr. Biden, what took you so long to recognize this problem? Or is this merely a political move to look good and attempt to gather votes for Democratic candidates in November? Here’s a solution: Stop buying oil from Russia (and bloating their coffers to pay for their war against Ukraine) and re-establish the construction of the Keystone pipeline, among other things. We simply must stop buying foreign oil and set systems in place for us to produce oil for our own needs. This is what the American public wants, and needs.

Care for the Turpin siblings

This Riverside County case reported in the paper (July 9) is just one more shameful event in the history of the “child and adult protective service.” This is rather mild when compared to what occurred in the case of Noah McIntosh back in 2019. Every time, just as this last case, the excuse given is “burdensome caseloads and lack of social workers.”

In 2019 there was a finding that the county has made significant strides to ensure the “safety and well being of children.” Really, how can the Riverside County officials sleep peacefully at night?
