Blue Jays set franchise mark in 28-5 romp over Red Sox

-

Raimel Tapia hit an inside-the-park grand slam after a misplay by Boston center fielder Jarren Duran and the Toronto Blue Jays set a franchise record for runs in a game, rolling past the Red Sox 28-5 on Friday night at Fenway Park.

Every Blue Jays starter had at least two hits, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied Frank Catalanotto’s franchise record with six of them.

Danny Jansen homered twice and drove in six runs. Matt Chapman and Teoscar Hernández added solo homers for the Blue Jays, who topped their previous single-game mark of 24 runs set June 26, 1976 against the Baltimore Orioles.

The 28 runs are the most ever yielded by a Red Sox team, eclipsing the previous mark in a 27-3 loss to Cleveland in 1923.

The Fenway Park faithful jeered throughout the night — except for a wedding proposal on the video board with the home team trailing 25-3. The woman’s “yes” was one of the few times Boston fans found reason to cheer.

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi (4-3) lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing a homer and being charged with nine runs.

It was a 29-hit night for Toronto — winner of four straight — which featured nearly as many follies by the Red Sox.

It started with Tapia’s home run sprint.

With two outs in the third and Toronto leading 6-0, Tapia lifted a two-out fly ball to center against reliever Austin Davis.

Duran took a couple steps back, then a couple in, then put up his hands in confusion. Boston fans groaned when the ball landed on the

warning track behind him.

Duran walked slowly toward the ball while left fielder Alex Verdugo raced over, slid to scoop it up and fired it toward the infield. The relay home wasn’t close to nabbing Tapia, who picked up speed when he realized Duran had lost the ball. PADRES 4, METS 1 >> Yu Darvish dominated New York on the mound and Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer off Max Scherzer that sent San Diego to a road victory.

Trent Grisham also went deep for the Padres.

Darvish (9-4) struck out nine and walked one in seven innings. He allowed four hits, including a twoout RBI double by Luis Guillorme that spoiled the shutout bid in the seventh.

Luke Voit singled to open the fourth against Scherzer (6-2). Hosmer then drove a 95 mph fastball the other

way to left field for his seventh home run.

YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 6 >> Aaron Judge extended his major league-leading home run total to 36 with a pair of towering shots and New York won at Baltimore.

Judge has six home runs in his last seven games. He has 34 career home runs against the Orioles, his most against any opponent.

Anthony Santander hit a three-run homer for the Orioles in the seventh inning off Aroldis Chapman that cut the margin to 7-6.

Judge gave the Yankees the lead in the third with a three-run homer to leftcenter off Tyler Wells (7-6).

Judge hit a solo shot in the fifth to boost the margin to 5-2. That ball traveled 465 feet.

CUBS 15, PHILLIES 2 >> Nelson Velázquez hit two late homers and drove in five runs,

Seiya Suzuki and Willson Contreras also went deep and Chicago routed host Philadelphia.

Ian Happ and Suzuki each had four hits for the Cubs.

Kyle Schwarber upped his NL-leading home run total to 30 with a solo drive in the first for the Phillies. REDS 9, CARDINALS 5 >> Joey Votto, Donovan Solano and Jonathan India homered, Tyler Naquin drove in four runs and Cincinnati scored a home win over St. Louis.

Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson suffered a broken right clavicle when he was hit by Paul Goldschmidt’s foul tip in the first inning. He exited after being unable to make a throw on Goldschmidt’s chopper between the plate and mound.

Adam Wainwright (6-8) was tagged for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.
