Ten Inland girls wrestlers claimed championships at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet on Saturday at Palm Springs High School.

This year’s Masters Meet came with a new format. Instead of a two-day event with one individual champion in each weight class being crowned champion, the section went to a one-day meet with two 16-person brackets and two champions for each of the weight classes.

San Dimas was the only Inland program with two championship wrestlers Saturday: 160-pounder Juliana Marquez and 170-pounder Kaley Rice.

Marquez pinned all four of her opponents, including one in the second period to beat Vida Beckel of Cypress to win one of the 160-pound championships. Rice also recorded four pins Saturday and claimed a championship when she pinned Quartz Hill’s Abena Adu in the opening period.

Inland wrestlers swept the titles at 101 pounds. Hamilton’s Olivia Lopez claimed one title when she pinned Northview’s Lexi Garza in the opening stages of the third period. It was Lopez’s fourth victory by pinfall. Lakeside Jillian Wells reached the final of her bracket with two pins and a decision, and Wells captured the championship when she pulled out a 2-1 decision over Marina’s Nathalie Erazo.

Hillcrest’s Ajalynn Panoke-jimenez pinned Tesoro’s Sophia Cornish in the second period to claim one of the championships at 106 pounds.

Paloma Valley’s Karissa Turnwall advanced to a 116-pound final with three pinfall victories and won a championship with a 12-3 major decision over Walnut’s Deandra Meza.

Orange Vista’s Addison Ellis showed dominance in claiming a title at 131 pounds. Ellis won all four matches via pinfall and spent less than seven minutes on the mat. Ellis won the championship when she pinned Foothill’s Britny Morales in the second period.

Temescal Canyon’s Cara Cheng captured her 137-pound bracket championship with an 8-1 decision over Corona’s Phylicia Sudario.

Valley View’s Alexis Jimenez also pinned four opponent en route to winning her championship at 143 pounds. Jimenez claimed that title when she pinned Northview’s Andrea Mateo in the second period.

Elsinore’s Gabby O’connell had a bye in the opening round and pinned two opponents to reach one of the championship matches at 189 pounds. O’connell claimed the title when she scored a 5-0 decision over Schurr’s Isabell Sosa.

Eight wrestlers in each weight class (top four in each bracket) secured a spot for next week’s CIF State championship meet at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield, and 35 wrestlers representing 23 Inland schools were among the 112 fortunate ones who advanced.

Colony, Corona, Hillcrest and Paloma Valley lead the way, with each school sending three wrestlers to the state finals.

Northview claimed the team championship with 157 points, while Walnut finished second in the standings with 144 points. Four Inland schools finished inside the Top 10: Corona (fourth with 104 points), Hillcrest (fifth with 88), San Dimas (sixth with 82) and Paloma Valley (seventh with 74).

In addition to Corona’s Sudario, six other Inland wrestlers reached a bracket final and finished as a runnerup Saturday: Ayala’s BK Martinez (111), Paloma Valley’s Makayla Correa (121), Chaffey’s Nicky Muratalla (150), Centennial’s Chontel Griffin (160), Hemet’s Diana Pomares (189) and Kyree Rubio of Canyon Springs (235).
