Vanderveer’s pursuit of Coach K continues

History will have to wait for Tara Vanderveer, as No. 5 Colorado denied her of career coaching win No.1,202nd, which would have tied Mike Krzyzewski for the most ever in college basketball.

Early foul trouble limited two-time All-american Cameron Brink to seven first-half minutes, stunting Stanford’s ability to get stops and making them one-dimensional on offense. Colorado took advantage in the third quarter, breaking open Sunday’s top-10 matchup.

With No. 8 Stanford’s 71-59 loss, Vanderveer remains at 1,201 victories in her illustrious career — one shy of Krzyzewski, the former Duke men’s coach. Vanderveer will get a chance to tie and pass Coach K when Stanford (15-2, 4-1) returns home for a pair of matchups against unranked opponents next weekend.

“Tara’s very humble, so she’s not really thinking about her record at all,” junior forward Kiki Iriafen said. “I think us as a team, we really wanted to get this win for her, to help her get closer to this historic achievement. But I’d say in terms of our coaches, they’re not really making it a big deal, but we wanted to win this one for her.”

Caitlin Clark-led Iowa moved up to No. 2 and Colorado to No. 3 behind top-ranked South Carolina in The Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll after a chaotic week that saw half of the top 10 teams lose.

The Gamecocks (15-0), who are the last unbeaten team left, routed Missouri in their lone game last week and received all 36 firstplace votes from the national media panel.

Previously undefeated UCLA and Baylor both lost and fell in the rankings. The Bruins dropped from second to fifth and the Bears plummeted from fourth to 12th after losing to both Kansas and Iowa State.

USC moved up to No. 6 after handing UCLA its first loss of the season.
