New in San Bernardino

When I was told more than a year ago that someone was planning to open a Waffle House in San Bernardino, I was skeptical.

There were so many reasons not to believe that information, the main one being that the chain has never ventured further west than the Phoenix area.

So I watched the building as construction was done, the building was painted and a drive-thru was added to it.

And it turns out it’s not a Waffle House after all, but a waffle house.

Chicken George Waffle House opened recently at 604 W. 40th St.

The restaurant offers a variety of breakfast and lunch/dinner plates with waffles and either breakfast meats or bonein fried chicken or fried chicken tenders.

Family meals with multiple pieces of chicken and waffles are also available, along with a variety of sides.

Online ordering is available. Hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Gone forever

A longtime former San Bernardino restaurant has recently been razed following decades of vacancy.

The restaurant at 2383 Sterling Ave. appears to have begun life as Lord Jeffrey’s, but is probably better known as Johnny’s Steak House.

If memory serves, Johnny’s lasted through the

’70s into the early ’90s, and at one point — I’m thinking mid-’90s — it became a Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles.

After Roscoe’s (and Shagg’s, a Roscoe’s clone), it was sold to a Puerto Rican family, who intended to open Rubio’s Cocina.

Signs were put up on the restaurant, but Rubio’s never happened, and the restaurant never reopened.

Sorry, we're closed

The longtime Rancho Cucamonga Claim Jumper has closed, reports reader Timm.

Signage has been stripped from the building at 12499 Foothill Blvd., but the location remains on the chain’s website.

A nearby Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt location has also closed.
